H

ollywood’s most famous ‘nearly’
man Leonardo DiCaprio took four
nominations before finally scooping
his Best Actor Oscar for 2016’s The
Revenant. And with his latest movie Once
Upon A Time In Hollywood
generating similar levels of
awards season buzz, the
44-year-old actor is refreshingly
honest about his hopes of it
bagging him another. ‘I would
by lying if I said I didn’t want
to be recognised for my work,
of course I do,’ he says. But
the star is also realistic. ‘You
have absolutely no control of
it. Actors can talk about their
work as much as they want, but
people are going to respond to
a film and all you can do is wait
and see what happens.’
As two of Tinseltown’s
biggest hitters, it seems
surprising that this is the first
time Leonardo and his co-star
Brad Pitt have worked together,
but he has nothing but good
things to say about his fellow
actor, revealing: ‘Not only is
Brad a terrific actor, but he’s a
professional.’ He also has kind
words for the film’s female lead,
29-year-old Aussie star Margot Robbie, who
he previously starred with in 2014’s The Wolf
Of Wall Street. ‘Everyone who came up to
me after the movie asked: “Who was that
girl? Where did you find her?” I love
working with Margot,’ he says.
Here, the Los Angeles-born
star, who has been dating 22-year-
old model Camila Morrone since
last year, talks about working with
Quentin Tarantino and why he can’t
say no to a new jacket...

How easy is it to get caught up
with the trappings of fame?
It’s important to find a balance. It
can go wrong if you don’t have the
right people around you. When I
was young, I had a period where I
thought I knew everything. Luckily,
a couple of people checked on me
because all of this is an imaginary
world. It’s based on art and your
achievements, which are important,
but we are not changing society
or solving world hunger. My life is

completely different than it was ten or 15
years ago, but I am just grateful to be able
to do what I do.

What is your biggest temptation in life?
I am not really into
big fancy cars or
private planes. I
like art and jackets.
I have too many
jackets. It’s a weird
obsession. It’s like
women with shoes.

What’s the most
expensive thing
you’ve ever
bought?
A house, or a
Warhol. I bought
one house for my
mum very early
on – and then I got
her another one.
That was the most
expensive one.

What was it like
to work with
Brad Pitt in Once
Upon A Time In
Hollywood?
There was an incredible ease and comfort
getting to work alongside Brad. We got
started around the same time, so there
was a familiarity there. Not only is Brad a

terrific actor, but he’s a professional. I feel
like we forged together – hopefully – a great
cinematic bond in the film.

And how about with Quentin Tarantino?
Quentin has a very unique process. There are
few people in this world who have a collective
knowledge about not only cinematic history,
but also music and television. It’s almost like
tapping into a computer database because
the wealth of knowledge is unfathomable

  • and it just keeps coming and coming. In
a way, I really feel like this movie is his love
story to his industry. At the helm of it, he’s put
two characters who are outsiders. The ‘60s
have come along and this industry has passed
them by. I’ve definitely felt like an outsider in
the industry at one time or another.

What are your favourite movies?
My favourite movies ever? I would have to
put them into categories – 2001: A Space
Odyssey is my favourite science-fiction film.
My favourite independent movie is Taxi
Driver and my favourite foreign film is Bicycle
Thieves. My favourite drama? Oh boy, that’s
too hard. There are too many! Maybe East
Of Eden. And comedy... Geez! When Harry
Met Sally. I don’t know why I love that movie
so much, but I do.

You and Margot Robbie also appeared in
The Wolf Of Wall Street together. What
makes her so special?
When Margot walked into the audition
room [for The Wolf Of Wall Street], she was
prepared and was already doing
the accent. She was just head and
shoulders above the rest as far as
her work ethic was concerned. We
felt like we really found somebody
special – she came in and she
really blew us away. I think there
was this really great chemistry
on screen between us, too. We
felt like we had found somebody
incredibly fresh and convincing.
Everyone who came up to me
after the movie asked: ‘Who was
that girl? Where did you find
her?’ When I told them she was
Australian, they were blown away.
I love working with Margot.
