Flaxseeds
Much like oily fish, the
levels of omega 3 are
high in both flaxseeds
and flaxseed oil.
‘Omega-3 fatty
acids are derived
from linolenic acid
and are naturally
found in the skin,’
reveals Dr Anjali.
‘They have an
important role in the
skin’s immune function
and they have also been shown to
have a “photo-protective” role – making
the skin more resilient to sunburn.’ Try
sprinkling a handful of them on porridge,
adding to a smoothie, or mixing with
yogurt and fruit for an omega-3 boost.

Sweet

Potatoes

Beta-carotene is
another kind of
carotenoid that’s essential
for summer skin and is often found
in orange-coloured foods, like sweet potatoes.
‘This provides a natural protective barrier against
the sun and helps reduce the redness that the skin
experiences when overexposed to UV light without
protection,’ says Kasia. ‘When we consume beta-
carotene, our bodies will naturally convert it to vitamin A

  • essential for skin health and reducing signs of ageing.’

Tomatoes
Carotenoids are powerful antioxidants that
help to fight the free radicals that linger
on the skin after UV-light exposure.
‘Lycopene is a specific type of^
carotenoid which can be found in^
tomatoes,’ says Kasia. ‘Not only do^
tomatoes have many skin-healthy
nutrients, they are proven to reduce
sunburn severity by up to 40%.’
