Creative Knitting – August 2019

(John Hannent) #1
Design note: The throw consists
of 30 rectangles each measuring
approximately 22 x 18 cm.
The various yarns used in this
rug are of different thickness
and we have altered the
number of stitches to achieve
a uniform width. However,
sometimes your tension
can change quite a bit with
different fancy yarns. If you
feel your rectangle is working
out too large or too small,
adjust your needle size or
stitches accordingly.

All pieces are worked in garter
stitch – knit St.

maKIng UP
Place pieces out to correspond with
the table. If you prefer your own
layout, just take note of which yarns
you have the most of so that you will
have sufficient for the fringing.
Ends can be darned in or used
to sew up with and darn in any
excess. Place any ends for the
rectangles in Row 1 and Row
6 on the outside edge to be
incorporated in the fringes.

Sew up using a flat seam. It is
easiest to sew the rug up across
the row first, ie sew Rectangle No.
9 to No. 5, then sew 5 to 3 etc. Put
this strip aside and continue in this
manner across Rows 2 to 6.
When all these rows have been
sewn sew the strips together, ie
Row 1 to Row 2 etc.

Fringe both ends as follows:
Makes fringes to correspond with
the yarns used in each rectangle
on Rows 1 and 6.
We have used an old Penguin novel
as a guide to wrap the yarn around
to make the fringes.
Generally each rectangle will need
7 fringe groups. Be generous with
