Iliad Decals

L

ast year Roden released
a new tool kit of the O-1
Bird Dog I suspected it
would not be long before Iliad
would have a look at producing
some alternative markings. Four
options are supplied for three
US Army in Olive Drab two with
the early large white and yellow
markings and one in the matt
Olive Drab with black writing. This
aircraft has white upper control
surfaces above the wings as well
as a painting of a hawk above each
wing, no doubt an attempt not to
be bombed on by the Air Force.
Three Foreign users are also
supplied from Pakistan in Olive
drab and South Korea in light
grey, but the most colourful and
unusual is the inal options. This
comes from 1952 is overall yellow
and operated by the Japanese
Hoantai the predecessor to Japans
Self Defence Force which has
the familiar Japanese markings

on the wings but a pink cherry
blossom on the fuselage sides.
Iliad always seems to release
two sheets together and the second
release this time it is a much-
requested reprint of their 1/72
scale sheet for US Navy and Marine
TV-2. Or, as I am sure most of us
would say a T-33 Shooting Star.
This was always one of
Iliad’s most colourful sheets
as it includes a red and white
trainer as well as a drone
controller in dark grey with

yellow wings and orange stripes.

  • Cessna L-19, H-1001, Japanese
    Hoantai, 1952-54.

CONCLUSION
The reissue of the TV-2 sheet
will be welcomed by many
small-scale modellers. And
I can see the L-19 Bird Dog
sheet selling well as Roden’s
kit s decal quality can be
a bit variable. So anyone
buying this kit may want
to think about adding this
sheet to their shopping list.
Our thanks to Iliad for
supplying these decals which
in the UK can be purchased
from Hannants.

APC Decals

B

eing an important
aircraft for the Czechs
it is no surprise that
several of this country’s
manufacturers have produced
1/72 scale kits of the
Letov S.328, most recently
by Special Hobby in 2015.
So it is no surprise that
another Czech company APC
decals have also decided
to produce some markings
for the Special Hobby kit.
Having already covered
Czech operation they have now
tuned to Bulgarian examples
and these are certainly quiet
interesting as they feature two
versions of National Insignia
that I am sure most modellers

would struggle to identify.

APC72131 LETOV S-328 BULGARIAN
SERVICE

  • Letov S.328 Vrana, 3. Pruzkumny
    Orljak, Jambor 1940. First Bulgarian
    Letov, still with original Czar
    insignia.

  • Letov S.328 Vrana, jaro 1945. Post-
    war form of Vrana aircraft.

  • Letov S.328.377 Vrana, 1947. Since
    1947, the last Letov, originally
number 25, flew in the state aircraft
    factor D.S.F. in Lovec.

CONCLUSION
Though for Western
modellers the Letov is a very
niche subject with theses
decals you will certainly
have other modellers
scratching their heads to
identify the owners.
Our thanks to Lubos

ICM Decals

L

ast month we reviewed
the latest sheet from ICM
designed for their own
Polikarpov I-16 Type 10 in 1/32 scale.
That sheet covered the type use by
the soviet supported Republicans.
After the Spanish civil war the
surviving Polikarpov’s were taken
over by the Nationalists. They then
remained in service for a further
20 years with last being retired in
the 1950s. This sheet covers this
time period and covers some very
interesting camoulages schemes
that appear similar to those used
by Italy, combined with the red/
yellow /red Spanish roundel.

1/32 SCALE
D3203 1-16 TYPE 10 SPANISH AF
(AFTER 1939)

  • 1-16 type 10, 2-G-3, Spanish
    Nationalists Air Force, Spring 1939.

  • 1-16 type 10, Gallur Fighter School,
    Spanish Air Force, 1940.

  • 1-16 type 10, 26th Aviation Group,
    Spanish Air Force, 1944-1945.

  • 1-16 type 10, 26th Aviation Group,
    Spanish Air Force, 1944-1945.

  • 1-16 type 10, Moron Aviation School,
    Spanish Air Force, 1940-1941.

  • 1-16 type 10, Moron Aviation School,
    Spanish Air Force, 1952.

CONCLUSION
As the Type 10’s kit decal sheet
features two very plain Soviet

schemes ICM have guaranteed
a large number of extra sales
by producing these two sheets
for Spanish operated examples.
And one marked with either of
these schemes will look good
posed next to the new Eduard
“Legion Condor” boxing of
the Messerschmitt Bf-109E.
Our thank to ICM for the
review sample which can
be purchased from any ICM
stockist around the world
at the same time as the ICM
Polikarpov I-16 Type 10 kit.
