D

ocuments showing whatcould happen in the UK
onceith as left the European Union (EU) have
been leaked (revealed without permission). The
secret Governmentreports about Brexit wereprinted
inTheSunday Timesnewspaperon18August.TheUK
is currentlyoncourse to leave the EU on 31 October.

WhatisBrexit?
Brexit is the wordused to describe the UK’s
decision to leave the EU–anorganisation of 28
countries that trade together and follow the same
rules. The leaked documentsexplain what the
impactcould be if the UK and the EUcannot officially
agree on their futurerelationship. This is known
as ano-deal Brexit.

What do the documentssay?
The documents suggestthatwithoutadeal, trade
could be disrupted. Therecould be long delays at
borders, whichcould affect food and medicine
supplies. Thecost of food and fuelcould rise if there
areshortages, accord ing to the documents.

Why is Brexit happening?
In a2016 public vote, known asareferendum, nearly
52% of voters said theywanted to leave the EU.
Theresa May,who wasthe UK Prime Minister until
Boris Johnsonreplaced her in July,reachedadeal
with EU leaders over their futurerelationship.Known
as the Withdrawal Agreement, itwasrejected by UK
Members ofParliament (MPs) three times. The EU

agreed to delay Brexit from 29 March until 31 October
to provide moretime foradealtobeagreed.
However, anew deal has not yet beenreached,
making the chanceofano-deal Brexit morelikely.

Why do politicians wantadeal?
Many politicians in the UK and the EU sayano-deal
Brexit could makeitd ifficult for businesses to trade,
and could cause delays for people travelling between
the two sides. Other politicians, including Johnson,
think the UK should leave on 31 October with or
withoutadeal. They think Brexit shouldn’t be delayed
again, although Johnson says he would prefer to
reach an agreement. On 21 August he met leaders
in France makeadeal.

Reportonno-deal Brexitleaked

After the UK leaves the EU,
the border between Northern
Ireland (part of the UK), and
Ireland (a separatecountry),
will be the only land border the
UK has with the EU.Both sides
want to avoid checksorguards
there. The EU says people must
be allowed to cross the border
easily, but that means all of the
UK would have tokeep following
EU rules untilasolution isfound.
This iscalled the backstop.
Johnson is against the UK
following EU rules after Brexit.
