Nepal has introduced new rules for anyone whowants to
climb MountEverest, the world’shighest peak. From next
season, adventurers will have to prove they have climbed
high mountains before, areproperly trained and have hired
experienced guides, beforetheycanclimb.The changes were
made after at least 11 people died or went missing this year.

Deadlyexplosionat wedding
On 17 August,abomb went off atawedding inKabul, the
capital of Afghanistan, killing 63 people and injuring 180
more. Both the bride and groom survived the blast. Islamic
State (IS), anextremist terrorist group,has claimed that it
wasresponsible. The president of Afghanistan, Ashraf Ghani,
said the attackwas“barbaric” (cruel). ISwants to create a
newcountry that would follow very strictreligious rules.

Finger wrestlersbattle it out
On 15 August, the annual finger wrestling
championships wereheld in Bavaria in south
Germany.Competitors dressed in theregion’s
traditionalcostume sat on opposite sides of a
table andeach put one finger throughasmall
leather loop.They then had to try to pulleach
other off their stools using the loop.The sport,
known asfingerhakelnin German, is thought to
date back to the 17thcentury.

Huge smokecloud spreadsoverRussia
Fires in Siberia,avastregion of Russia, have created a
massive cloud of smokeand soot that has spreadover
an area20 times the sizeofthe UK. Other fires in Alaska,
Canada and Greenland have added moresmoketothe cloud.
The fires, which have been burning for three months, were
caused by unusuallywarm weather.Not many people live in
the areaswherethe fires areblazing, but it is thought they
will affect the environment and wildlife.

homelessafterfire breaks out
Between 3,000 and 10,000 people are
homeless afterafiredestroyed at least
1,200 homes in Dhaka, Bangladesh’s
capital city.The firestarted on 16
August. It spreadquickly because
many of the houses in the areawere
built close together and weremade
from flimsy materials. At the timeThe

their homes arebeing looked after in
camps and schools, wheretheycan
receive food,water and shelter.Itis
