À LA MODE
DINING ROOM | ROBERT BROWN
Having decorated his previous Southeastern Designer Showhouse room with a woman
in mind, Robert Brown took a different tact for this year’s showhouse, selecting a
masculine scheme for the dining room that encompassed the designer’s own stylistic
preferences, including his signature color, gray. The star of the space is a custom-
designed de Gournay wallpaper, whose very modern design of silk organza cutouts
layered against a tarnished silver-leaf background refl ects Brown’s fondness for abstract
art, which is further demonstrated by two carved wood sculptures by artist Kimo Min-
ton. Known for mixing contemporary furniture with mid-century modern and even an
antique or two, Brown paired a Thomas Pheasant for Baker dining table, customized in
a piano-black lacquer fi nish, with two different styles of vintage chairs: a set of circa-
1960s Stewart MacDougall Klismos chairs, which have their original leather seats, and a
set of ’70s-era Karl Springer chairs upholstered in Ultrasuede. —Jennifer Boles
