Pre-loved treasures
Mike Slabolepszy of Edgemead, Cape Town writes
As an avid Home reader, I thought I’d share what I have
created from second-
hand items I’ve found
over the years at car
boot sales, garage sales,
markets and thrift stores
or been given as hand-
me-downs.
Nothing was bought
new. All of these pieces
have a story or history
behind them – and some
of them took a long time
to find. Now it’s time for
me to scale down, so I
will be selling up but I
thought you might like to
take a look...

My motto is to never
throw magazines
away, as you never
know when you may
need them. Recently,
while looking for a
knitting pattern for a
friend, I came across
DIY Deon’s shoe
shelf/bed-end in
your February 2017issueanditinspired me to
tackle my very first woodworkproject with
the help of my two grandsons, aged nine and

  1. I had been planning on buying a cupboard,
so this was just the boost I needed. I adapted
it slightly to suit my needs and I am extremely
    proud of my efforts.
    Thanks for an awesome magazine.

Fit for a queen
Debbie North of Johannesburg
writes I saw a blanket I liked in
your 2018 Home Renovations issue
and decided to replicate it. I used
pure yarn (mohair and wool) to
make it and it took me four months
to complete. The final product fits a
queen-sized bed. Take a look!

WINNING LETTER

Moroccan-inspired
makeover
Monika van der Westhuizen writes
For some time now, I have been dreaming
about a Bohemian-themed living space.
The Moroccan rugs on page 13 of your
April issue just confirmed that I should
redecorate my sitting room. I’ve arranged
for someone to start painting and I removed
all my existing art from the walls – it’s time
for a new look!
My bedroom will be next (inspired by
page 68, right), then my garden... Oh
goodness, I’d better get working before the
next issue of Home sees the light. So many
ideas, so little time!
Thank you for all the inspiration.

I loved the ‘Black is
back’ article in your
May 2019 issue as I,
too, adore black
features in my home.
However, it made me
a little sad as I
remembered your
former editor, the
late Anneke Blaise,
who wrote in her
editor’s note in your
January 2014 issue
that she had an
ongoing love affair
with black. There was a lovely photo of her
sitting on the arm of a black couch, dressed in
black with a black wall behind her.
Thank you for an outstanding magazine!
One of my all-time very best.
