Décor dilemma

The challenge
Ronell Ferreira of George writes We bought a house and
have been struggling to come up with attractive but practical
plans for the laundry and scullery.
The scullery is just off the kitchen and the laundry is
on the other side with a separate entrance; the washing
machine, tumble dryer and dishwasher are kept there.
There is also a toilet and shower in that space. I suspect it
was an outside room that the previous owners converted into
an inside room.
The laundry works well where it is now but I want to close
up the door to keep it separate. The entire space is tiled and
it has the only toilet on this floor, so it could make a good
guest loo.
There will be time for structural changes later; for now, I’ll
have to work with these rooms as is.

I suggest that you move the dishwasher from
the laundry to the scullery; that way, it’s easier
to deal with dishes in one area and the laundry
stays clean and fresh like a laundry should.

LAUNDRY The grid-style tiles in this room are on trend at the
moment, so I suggest making the most of them. With the
dishwasher gone, build a work surface over the tumble dryer with
some extra space for a laundry basket. Keep the cupboards above
the washing machine as storage space for detergents and other
unsightly items but paint them a dramatic matte black. You can
apply a chalk paint directly on the melamine or you can prime it
with Plascon’s Tile & Melamine Primer and then use Plascon’s
water-based Velvaglo as a topcoat. Either way, you need to clean the
cupboards before applying any paint: use sugar soap to wash them,
then lightly sand them so the paint will adhere properly. Make sure
to remove any dust created by the sanding before you apply paint.
