renovation, dirty
water and mud was

Elements of warmth
Before the new concrete floor was cast, Braam
mixed clay dust from the old brick walls with
cement to create a weathered look. The floor was
sealed afterwards with clear Duram Showfloor
polyurethane floor paint. “The cellar can appear
rather cold because of the exposed brick walls, so
I wanted to bring in warmth with the closed
combustion fireplace against the wall and the
Ngunihideonthecementfloor,”saysBraam.

The unusual TV stand was previously a trolley
used for a pump that pumped wine from the vats.

On the interior, the raw clay bricks were sealed
with Novabrik. On the exterior, all the old
plaster was chipped off and wire mesh was
laid over the bricks to improve stability; they
were then replastered.
