These old newspapers – all Cape Times
from 1946 – had nearly disintegrated, so
Braam sprayed them with bonding liquid
to preserve them.The biggest challenge?
There were no services, so
we had to install electricity
and water, says Braam.
“It was amusing to watch
the service providers
standing around on site,
shaking their heads in
disbelief! Only myself, my
friend Riaan Pienaar and
the architects were able to
visualise the end result.”Guests marvel at the domed
ceiling, which was clad with
newspapers by Oupa Abraham to
seal the formwork so that the wet
cement would not seep through
