The striking
facades
bringing
colour to the
streets of
bolivia
They may look like sets for
a new Wes Anderson movie, but
the work of Bolivian architect
Freddy Mamani is rooted in a far
older visual tradition. To create
these fantastical facades in El
Alto, Freddy drew inspiration
from the lines and motifs of the
ruined city of Tiwanaku, as well
as the South American tradition
of weaving colourful textiles. His
work strives to bring modernity
- and just a bit of magic – to the
otherwise adobe-red vernacular
of the region. n
