Camping Le Moulin Fort,Indre-et-Loire

Camping Le Moulin Fort, a three-star,
all tou ring site run by English owners,
is ideally pl aced forvisiting Loire
châteaux, breaking a journey south,
or – as wediscovered in sweltering
temperatures – simply relaxing inthe
shade with a cool glass of localwine.
The site is sit uated alo ng the banks
of the River Cher, a prettier tributar y
of the Loire, a pleasant 20-minute
walk from Chenonceau, which is many
people’s favourite château.
The reception , bar/brasserie and
a small shop are all housed in the
old m ill itself. You can watch the
big sc reen TV, order croissants and
baguettes for the morning, browse
the information onthings to do, or
borrow a bookfrom the library. There
are two good, clea n f acilities blocks ,
incl uding washing-upsinks and a
laundry area, two ou tdoor swimming
pools and children’s pl ay parks. All is
well-judged, especially the fo od menu,
which has dail y specia ls; they also
organise barbecues and occasional
live music.

the site has developed andbeen
improved over the years. The 130

pitches are level gra ss and most have

some shade. The best and bigges t

pitches are those by the ri ver, with the

added attraction of watching pl easure

boats of all sizes go by. Boats may

be launched from the site; you ca n

also hire bicycles (including electric

bikes) and cycle or walk alo ng a

network of paths.

In addition to visiting Chenonceau,

the châ teaux at Amboise, Loches

and Chaumont are all easy drives. A

fascinating photog raphy museu m

is next door tothe site, a nd the

nearest winery, se lling localTouraine

white, red, rosé andsparkling wine,

is less th an a mile away. If you feel

like eating out, Chenonceau has

several restaurants, and the Re lais in

Franceuil is astonishingly good value.

We were prepared for the 6A

electric hook-ups;

but ourhigher-

maintenance Swiss

neighbourstripped

their supply almost

immediately

by plugging in

their Nespresso

machine...
