H

aving spent the last 16 years
holidaying mainly in Brittany
where we owned a propert y
until 2017,we decided it was time to
venture f urther afield. Our daughters
were in their late teens andspending
time pursuing their own in terests,
whilst we were lo oking for anescape
mechanism f rom ‘nor mal’ life.
We looked at everything from
van conversions to more modern
motorhomes, fr om early V Ws to
Transits. Our leaning wastowards
VW and, although early ones were
considered, practicality and reliability
were also important and the T4
seemed toachieve these g oals.

When we found the T4Trophy
we finally bought, it was the space
provided with the high-topand the
end washro om that sealed the deal.
Admittedly, it’s not the sportiest-
looking ’van we hadchecked out, but
it is after all a campervan.

WELCOME TO THEFAMILY
So, Ken the ca mper(the number pl ate
is DOD) becamepart of the fami ly,
collecting him in July 2017after a new
MoT andhabitationtest.
The dri ve back from Somerset was
an initiation, havingnot driven him
that far on the test drive. With some

fairly steep inclin es to navigate, I was
soon aware that this was anear three-
tonne ve hicl e that required respect
when driving.
The extra length, combinedwith
the weight and asimple engine and
five-speed gearbox, providefor steady
progress once your driving style
adapts. There is also the consideration
that this is a 24-year-old vehicl e.
