Adriatic islandof Grado crossed athree-

mile longbridge over the dramatic and

panoramic waterscape of the lagoon.

Gradois a classy resort, witha harbour

full of boats and awell-kept promenade. We

sought outthe town’s attractivehistorical

centre andits two earlyChristian churches

withrecycledRomancolumns andsixth

centurymosaics.

Wemade gooduse of the cycle routes.

Heading inlandwefoundAquileia, an

ancientRoman city with the remains of a

Roman harbourand abasilicawithearly

Christian mosaics inthe crypt.

A few kilometreseast of Grado we used

the nature reservesguidetoexplorethe

CavanataValley. Cyclingalong quiet lanes

wespotted flamingos, egrets andflocksof

bee eaters. AtHotel Caneo, small boats are

moored in shady creeksand wewatched

coypu swimmingalong the River Isonzo.

Returningtoour campsite, westopped

at a roadsidestalltobuystrawberriesand

asparagus fresh fromthe fields.
