high pressure hose and fittings.
Luckily, I had a good secondhand
displacer lying around. The real issue
was how far the suspension would
need to be dismantled to get the old
one out. Images of snapped radius
arm bracket bolts f lashed through
my mind.
Once the car was up on stands, I
started by disconnecting the
pipework to the rear of the subframe.
The assister spring was disconnected
from the radius arm, and with all the
luck I’m due this year, as I lowered
the radius arm, the suspension strut

and the dowel that locates it in the
displacer just slid apart. These are
usually seized together and are
impossible to remove from the
subframe unless the radius arm is
removed first. If they separate, you
remove them, and then the displacer
can be removed. So that’s exactly
what happened.
The new displacer has been fitted,
and when I finally shut the door on
the Elf, it was sitting square on its
suspension. Let’s see what it’s decided
to do by the next time I decide to go
for a drive.

With all the luck on my side, the dowel and strut separated. The displacer could then be
removed, and the problem
became apparent.

The flexible hose had
perished and then split - no
coming back from that one

Spare displacer doesn’t look much
prettier but at least it holds pressure.

“On the bright side, my dodgy

pipework was still holding”

Rusty cornflakes and soaked in hydro
fluid, the subframe needed a clean up.
