year. Including “the old Mini for spares.”
“As soon as I saw it I knew this Mini
was a pearl and it was my responsibility
to make it as correct as possible. I’m so
happy I kept my promise.”
UNDER THE HAMMER
Lars patiently waited a full year before
the auction was publicised, but after
pouring over seemingly endless adverts
and listings he was disappointed to see
that the Mini was not listed. When he
asked why the vehicles from the garage
had not been included in the sale he was
told that they simply weren’t up to
scratch, but would possibly be sold in a
yard sale another year down the line.
Lars kept an eye out for further
information. The year of waiting quickly
turned into two, until a small advert in
the paper announced the vehicle sale.
Lars turned up accompanied by his
brother and a huge sense of anticipation,
only to find the Mini surrounded by
people. His heart sank as he started to
think that he had lost his chance.
As they approached, Lars and his
uncovering something much more
exciting. Whilst looking for parts for the
Draken he stumbled across an old blue
Mini with Cooper badges. Lars had
previously worked as a Mini mechanic
in the 1970s and had three Coopers of
his own, so he couldn’t resist taking a
closer look.
The car in question had a MkI door on
one side and a MkII door on the other.
The starter button was in the f loor and
the seat hinges were another clear
indicator that this was a very early
model. He couldn’t fight the urge to
investigate further, lifting the bonnet
and removing the sound deadening from
the bulkhead to uncover a DOMI Morris
import plate which was clearly marked
chassis number 131.
Lars knew there and then that he had
discovered some remarkable. He
promised himself that he would not only
make that car his but he would also
restore it back to the state that it
deserved to be in.
Enquiring further, he was told that the
collection would be auctioned off next
