Mini Magazine – September 2019

(Chris Devlin) #1
around the front and rear windscreens...
and engine is Cooper S along with its
ancilliaries. The shell is not a lightweight,
but I feel like that has some early history
as could possibly have done club level
motorsport. The rear window sticker I
think came about in its less glamourous
days and will have been sold from a used
car lot going by the style of sticker.
Halifax is close to where Harry Ratcliffe
came from and worked, and you do find
little gems around that area. I still think
there is something with that Mini...”
Whether it was a racer or not, Mike has
no plans to take it on the track himself.
He reconditioned it for the road as soon

as he got hold of it. He did the points, put
in a new water pump, took out the carbs,
stripped them and rebuilt them. He did a
fair amount of work over just four days.
Luckily, there is a workshop next door to
the film studio, so he could nip in
between takes and have a bit of a fiddle.
“There is a guy there called Frank - at
Frank and Jake’s Garage in Berkhamsted

  • who fell in love with it, so he’d say to me,
“I’ll keep going with the brakes, you do
that bit of filming and I’ll be ready for you
when you come back.” I’ve called the car
    Frankie after him.”
“Me and Frankie are going to go on a
journey and that journey starts right

Rocker cover bears the legend ‘Weslake’...

Cooper S has certainly
seen a bit of life, but
it’s still very sound in
all the right places.

Mike has replaced the water pump. Floors feature early type sills.
