ith this September/
October issue in your
hands, riding season
obviously is beginning
to wind down for many
of us across the country.
Amazing how fast summer goes, isn’t
it? Maybe it feels like that to me just
because in my neck of the woods,
summer took its time in arriving.
Perhaps that means it’ll hang around
for a few weeks longer. Summer seems
to whiz by like this every year, so I’m
not sure why it consistently catches me
off guard. Maybe I take on too many
projects in the summer and, before I
know it, fall is approaching?
Personally, September is my
favourite month during which to ride
for a number of reasons. The tempera-
ture is cooler and while I’m not a fan
of being cold, that crispness in the
air – particularly in early morning – is
energizing, and I think the machine
likes the chilled air better as well.

roads because cottagers and tourists
stay closer to home now that the kids
are back in school. (My favourite
roads in Ontario are in cottage country
because the roads twist and turn
around so many lakes and provide
spectacular scenery.) September also
brings out the fall colours, if you’re
lucky enough to live in an area with
vast tracts of hardwood forests. Last
but not least, the mosquitos and biting

to like about September as the riding
season winds down.
Depending on where you live,
October and, sometimes, even part of
1RYHPEHUFDQEHÀQHULGLQJPRQWKV
as well, albeit with cooler temperatures
and more unpredictable weather –
which means I try not to venture too far
from home then. I’ve ridden in snow
many times, but that doesn’t mean I
need to do it again.
I once rode for an hour heading
home at 1 a.m. from a December
Christmas party and while it was chilly,
it was a very enjoyable ride. That same
year, my daughter, Emily, and I loaded
our trail bikes into the back of my truck
on Christmas Day and we went trail
riding. That was unusual, for sure, but
it could happen again?
I’m sure many of you had a great
riding season and have plenty of
fantastic travel stories, have seen some
amazing scenery and eaten at some
outstanding restaurants. If you feel the
urge to share your travels, photos, great
eateries or what have you, remember to
send your treasured information in to
share with our readers. We are always
looking for a brief description and a
photo for WTF – “Where’s The Food?”
- and your vintage family and friends
photos for our “Remember When?”
section on our back page.
If you feel like stringing a few words
together and gathering a couple of
handfuls of quality, high-resolution
photos, feel free to send them in for
PHWRORRNDW<RXUVWRU\PD\JHW
chosen and published in the pages of
Motorcycle Mojo. We do pay for reader
submissions – you won’t get rich, but
it does pay for gas, food and beverages
for your next outing. Or you can put
that cash toward that accessory or new
riding gear you’ve had your eye on all
summer.
Also keep in mind: our calendar
contest is running once again; deadline
for that is Sept. 30. Send your motor
cycle-related, high-resolution photos
to [email protected] and, if
they are chosen, you could have your
image hanging on thousands of walls
across the country for a whole month.
In addition to one month of fame, you’ll
also receive a Mojo prize pack.
Enjoy your travels this fall. And
here’s hoping for an extended riding
season.
