100% Biker – August 2019

aving said that, the said combination was a
1936 990cc Brough Superior which is kind
of a bike show in itself and all on its own!
Having never been to this event before I had
no idea what to expect, so I spent the time I
had free doing those essential things that make me
sound like a professional and know what I’m doing.
That included formatting my memory cards, cleaning
my lenses and then replacing the fingerprints I’d just
removed as I clumsily manhandled my camera. That
took a while and then obviously there was signing
autographs for my fans and checking my settings
aperture, ISO, etc, and, for you camera nerds,
making sure I had bracketing turned off so I don’t
sit there wondering why my settings keep changing
every time I take a photos and end up puzzled until
I remember that I had used it and not turned it off
again. (Insert camera nerd embarrassed laugh, as we

all do it and kick ourselves when we remember. Also
insert bemused look from everyone else who has no
idea what I’m talking about or, for that matter, cares.)
Now, what were we talking about? Ah yes, the
show. There is that ever-present moment at every
single bike show or event whereby doubt arises in
everyone—the organisers, the helpers and myself—
about how successful the show will be, or even if
anyone will turn up. I have only ever been to one
event where nobody turned up; it was vile weather,
but the show was going ahead as bands and land
were booked. The total attendance was myself and
two dedicated club members at the gate at said
unnamed show, and even I gave up after a few hours.
But, remember this, many of these shows don’t
make much money if any, especially when bands
are booked so even in bad weather they need your
support otherwise we may lose them altogether.

Held at the Robin Hood, a regular haunt of the club whose name everyone

mispronounces, Cernunnos MCC’s Beltane Bike Fest consists of a bike show,

barbecue and music. However, when I arrived—early as always—setting up was

still going on and I was treated to a large field with a single bike and sidecar

parked in the middle of the field...
