100% Biker – August 2019

(ff) #1

T

his was the second edition, the last one being held at
the RothFink Lock Up in Caerphilly. Although the
dates are generally the same —usually the second
Wednesday of the month—the bike night moves
around, which means a new venue each time. It’s a
good idea; it makes the bike night different each time as well
as providing trade for a local business. This time it was the
café at the Spit and Sawdust skate park where chef Christian
had even come up with a special burger just for the night.
The place was doing good trade and seems like a nice place to
hang out.
With the threat of rain, there were fewer bikes than on the
previous bike night, but that didn’t dampen anyone’s spirits.
There were young people on skateboards using the indoor
skate park and a couple of really young people doing tricks on
BMX bikes. My mate, Derek, and I watched them for a while,
decided we were probably a little old for that sort of thing

now, and wandered back outside where Chris had just arrived
on his Harley Shovelhead and Sami on her Kawasaki. The car
park started to fill up a couple of Pan chops, a pair of Yamaha
XS650 chops, as well as a few other nice looking Harley
bobbers. Even a big old ’50s Pontiac turned up.
When it started to spot with rain, we decided to make our
way home. I had my wet weather gear with me but I didn’t
think I needed it. How wrong was I... About a mile up the
A470 we hit a wall of water. The joy of not having a front
guard showed its face and laughed at me. It was, by then,
pointless to stop as I was already soaked. By the time we got
to our junction I could hardly see and the water had flooded
my headlight and blew the bulb, so, for the last four miles, I
had to follow closely on Derek’s tail so I knew where to go! But
that didn’t spoil a good event and I look forward to the next
one. For details of the Just Ride bike night, check out http://www.

With the summer underway, Chris Hatton and Sami Graystone of FTH,

purveyors of cool clothing as well as owners of some damn fine chopper

motorcycles, decided to hold their FTH Just Ride bike nights once again
