100% Biker – August 2019

(ff) #1
in his mind’s eye of how the end result would look,
he didn’t waste any time or any of the already-
stretched finances in buying or making parts that
he didn’t need. The West Coast Choppers tank
and rear mudguard were easily sorted with some
bespoke stainless steel struts made for the rear by
Tom himself. As he wanted a long and low look to
keep it really stealthy, Tom went with the low-slung
handlebars—made by himself, from one and three-
quarter inch stainless steel tube—and some home-
brewed low exhaust pipes, which aid in making the
bike look even lower than it actually is.
When it came to paint, Tom already knew that
he was going to continue the ‘stealth’ theme, with
the neat Stealth Grey, as seen on various models of
Ford car. The inspiration for this had come from a
chop built by Phil Piper a number of years ago which
had been finished in grey primer. For the rest of the
bike, Tom chose a similarly sombre black, but in a
combination of satin and gloss powder coat to give
some contrast. Mentioning powder coat brings forth
the comment that this bike holds the record for the
number of powder coated parts on one of his builds—
no less than 38 individual pieces!
