Model Aircraft – September 2019

(Nandana) #1

I

t’s always a pleasure to bring an unusual
story to back up a model build! This
month we have the story of Operation
‘Paper Tiger II’ from the Vietnam War,
when on November 4 1965, US Navy
Skyraider ‘572’ rolled of the elevator and
onto the launch deck of USS Midway, with a
somewhat unorthodox bomb under its right
wing - a toilet that had been decommissioned.
Some erstwhile crewmen had made a rack and
ins for it and a nose fuse in the front. The plane
went on to deliver its ‘special weapon’, aimed
to commemorate the six-millionth pound of
ordnance dropped over Vietnam! Such are the
things of legend! Elsewhere this month we
have a super Felixstowe from Andrew Root,
and a look at the Vought Vindicator with
a colourful build from Rene Van Der Hart.
In our Model Aircraft Manual this month
Mario Serelle looks at the Grumman Goose,
and Kitti Tatsumaki brings us a double bill
of Malaysian Hawks, whilst James Ashton
looks at another World War II US Navy
aircraft the Grumman Avenger. The F-
Phantom igures once again in our pages
with an excellent build from Ashley Dunn,
backed up with some photo-references for
good measure. So as always there is plenty
to enjoy! So all that remains for me to say
is......

Happy Modelling

Andy
