firstacquirethepuppy,
canrepresentanearly
stepinthisprocess.
Whenyoufirstget
yourpuppy,socialise
it asmuchaspossible,
exposingit toeveryday
sightsandsoundssoit
becomesaccustomedto
novelexperiencesand
becomesmoreconfident.
Witha gundogpuppy
youcanstarttheprocess
whenteachingthe‘stay’
command.Walka short
distanceawayfromyour
puppy;if it stayscalm
andsettled,walkback
andrewardit.Gradually
buildupthelength
oftimeyourpuppyis
abletostayrelaxedand
calmwhilephysically
separatedfromyou.
Simultaneouslycreate
a ‘refuge’ for your puppy,


somewherecomfortable
whereit feelssafeand
secure.Suitablysized
dogcratescanbe
adoptedforthispurpose,
orusea stairgateacross
thedoortotheroomin
whichyouintendleaving
yourpuppy.Create
somewherecomfortable
forit toremainwhile
stillabletosee,smell
andhearyou.Make
suretherefugeis the
righttemperatureand
thatyourpuppyhasa
comfortablebedand
accesstofreshwater.
Repeatthe‘stay’
exerciseindoors.With
