AS YOU FIGHT

VOL. 8 ISSUE 10

T

his month’s issue is loaded with inter-
esting and enlightening articles that
we hope will open your eyes to new
information and ways of thinking. While
that’s always our goal, there are a few
pieces to which I want to call to your attention this
month.
I think it’s safe to say that most of our readers consider
themselves gun folks who take firearm ownership seri-
ously. They keep their weapons in good working order
and make sure they’re stored safely. They are ready to
go when it’s time to put some meat on the table or are
needed to defend their lives and property and those
whom they hold dear. I also believe they practice at the
range to ensure they’re skilled and safe with their firearms
and many also use this time to pass the benefits of
their knowledge and experience on to their children and
others.
Dana Benner’s article on realistic practice with firearms
suggests that range time can and should be used to pre-
pare the shooter for real-life scenarios, as hunting requires
more skill than plinking away at a static target that’s out
in the open. Rarely will this be true in a real-life situation,
so pay extra attention when you read his article. Adding
some stress and other challenges, in appropriate ways, to
range day can pay huge benefits if the SHTF in your living
room in the middle of the night.
Brian Morris’ article about building a home shooting
range isn’t for everyone, but if you’re fortunate enough
to have a homestead large enough to accommodate
this feature, he provides a great explanation of many
aspects to be considered before approaching this type of
project. While safety should still be at the top of the list, a
home range can be the ideal location to practice realistic
training scenarios.
As I get older, I am increasingly aware of the erosion of

certain types of skills as well as physical strength and
endurance. These things happen to all of us at some point
and to some extent, whether we want to admit it or not. I
think it’s safe to say that most people who value self-re-
liance have a great deal of confidence in their abilities,
both physical and mental, but we need to recognize their
temporary nature. Similarly, Dr. Will Dabbs’ article about
the effects of food, water and sleep deprivation provides
us with a medical explanation of what happens to the
human body and mind when we don’t get enough of
these essentials of life. It is an excellent narration of how
the lack of proper hydration, nutrition and rest will under-
mine our performance and ability to overcome adversity,
no matter how old we are.
While I’m talking about reasonable expectations, I’d like
to try to clear up some questions about the availability of
ASG on newsstands around the country. While many of
our readers are loyal subscribers, this magazine is avail-
able at almost 15,000 locations where magazines are
sold. I can’t provide a complete list of retailers here, but I
can say that this group adds up to more than 63 percent
of our newsstand distribution and may help you find your
next issue: Albertsons, Books-A-Million, Food Lion, Kroger,
Meijer, Publix, Ralphs, Rite Aid, Safeway, Vons, Walgreens
and Walmart. We’re also available on military bases in
AAFES, MCX and Nexcom stores.
