Barbecue time!

Nadiya Hussain gives tips for her perfect outdoor party food

What’s on

TV

T

he thought of catering for
hungry friends and family
can be really daunting,
but Nadiya Hussain makes
barbecue cooking look oh-so
easy in her new one-off show.
‘We all lead such busy lives
that finding the energy to
cook can be tricky, but
summertime is party time,’
says Nadiya. ‘I love being
in the kitchen when
the sun’s streaming in,
and there’s nothing
better than treating
family and friends
to my favourite
summer food.’
The former
Bake Off winner

is totally unflappable as she
shares her seasonal recipes.

Sunny delights
Dishes include rosemary and
olive bread, a princess torte
cake, edamame wild rice and
a salad made with kiwi and
feta cheese. ‘Fruit and cheese
are a match made in heaven,’
she says. ‘Salads don’t have
to be boring, they just don’t!’
Nadiya also meets the
legendary cookery writer
Claudia Roden and her family,

who are putting a fresh spin on
the classic ice lolly, and travels
to Leicestershire, where she
harvests the key ingredient for
a cooling elderflower cordial.
But it’s the whole butterflied
leg of lamb gently roasted on
the barbecue with a sticky
rhubarb glaze that really steals
the show. ‘Cooking for a group
can be daunting,’ Nadiya says.
‘We all just need to be a little
bit more adventurous!’ Q

Corrie’s Sair Khan takes on a Channel-

swimming challenge for charity

S

he braved the jungle last
year in I’m a Celebrity...
but Coronation Street
star Sair Khan says her latest
celeb challenge makes that
look like a walk in the park!
Sair is one of a group of
celebrities who are teaming
up to swim the English
Channel next month – in aid
of Stand up to Cancer, which
starts this week – including
Olympian Linford Christie,
TOWIE’s James Argent, singer
Simon Webbe and Hollyoaks
actress Rachel Adedeji. Their
progress will be followed in
C4’s four-part series Sink or
Swim. And to make it a little

bit harder – and encourage
kids to take the plunge

  • many of them are
    non-swimmers!
    ‘When I got in
    the pool for my
    assessment, I
    said I could do
    breaststroke.
    They laughed
    and told me,
    “That’s doggy
    paddle!”,’ says Sair,
    who plays Alya
    Nazir in Corrie.

The 31-year-old actress
says she had personal
reasons for signing up.
‘I’ve experienced loss,
and have a lot of friends who
have gone through cancer
treatment,’ she explains.
‘I wanted to do something
to show solidarity,
and it’s a cathartic
experience
for myself.’
Sair has been
doing intensive
training since the
beginning of
July, and
admits
that

it’s been tough so far. ‘There
have been massive ups and
downs,’ she reveals. ‘I’ve
struggled, and there have
been a lot of tears!’

New heights
Swimming the Channel – or
at least, part of it, since the
celebs will take turns in the
water – is quite something to
tick off your bucket list. So
what new challenge is Sair
looking forward to next?
‘I’m done after this!’ she
laughs. ‘I’d love to be one
of those people who say,
“I’m going to climb Everest
next.” But I’m not!’ Q
