MORE THAN A

FACELIFT

Discovery 3
The Disco 3 represents the
biggest leap forward for
Discovery, apart from the
latest model.
It was immediately
identifiable as a Discovery
but aimed at the more
modern adventurer.
The traditional body-
on-frame was ditched for a
monocoque design, to which
Land Rover bolted a fully
independent air suspension and
two Jaguar engines – the first
time these two brands would
work together.
It was quite a lavish vehicle,
edging ever closer to Range

Discovery 4
From the outside, the Discovery
4 looked almost exactly like the
Discovery 3. Land Rover called
it a “modest style upgrade”,
which is the most on-the-nose
description in PR history.
Calling it a facelift, however,
would be a disservice to a
fantastic car.
Featuring more high-tech
features than ever before, the
Discovery 4 was equipped with
brand-new engines and an
even more advanced version of
Terrain Response. A Surround-
view camera system made its
debut, allowing drivers to see
360-degrees around the vehicle
from the infotainment screen

all-New Discovery
Disco 5 was introduced in July
2017 which means enough
time has gone by to find a low-

less than the new car.

volt charging points and in-car
WiFi hotspot for eight devices.
All three seating rows are
available with heated seats –
heated and cooled in rows one

TECH IS THE

WAY FORWARD

It’s modern interpretation
of the Discovery 1’s boxy
exterior is nearly as iconic,
as are the adventures this car
went on during its lifespan.
For reference, just Google
Kingsley Holgate.
The good news is that these
have become quite a bargain
recently. For around R500 000,
you can get a well looked
after example with a full
service history with less than
100 000km on the clock.

Rover territory. Interior niceties
included navigation and
Bluetooth connectivity.
The biggest leap forward was
the all-new Terrain Response
system. It was the first of its kind,
offering the driver the choice of
various driving modes depending
on conditions. The vehicle then
selected the right settings for said
conditions, which made driving
off-road as easy as falling out of
a tree.

to enter or exit the vehicle.
There’s not much to tell you
here that you can’t read in the
full story on page 24, but we will
say that it opened our eyes with
regard to this 4×4.
We weren’t terribly excited
about the vehicle but seeing
what it is capable of in 24 hours
was mighty impressive.
If it can take that, it will take
whatever you throw at it.
