  1. PEAK DESIGN SHELL

CAMERA COVER

The last thing you want after

forking out for a camera is to

get it wet, muddy or dusty.

The Peak Design Shell offers

an extra layer of protection

against water, snow, dust and

abrasion. Using stretchy fabric

with a waterproof membrane,

it keeps your camera safe

without adding bulk or

impeding you. It allows for

easy access to the viewfinder

and controls without

removing the cover.

Note: this cover does not
mean you’ll be able to stand in
torrential rain for 30 minutes
as you happily snap away.
Rather, it’ll keep your camera
protected if you’re standing in
the rain and want a few snaps
of your kid’s rugby match or,
on the dunes in the wind.

  1. BENRO GH2 GIMBAL HEAD FOR TRIPOD
There are videos you can check out online if you haven’t heard
of a gimbal head. Basically, it’s a head for your tripod. It’s one
for the serious photographers so don’t bother with this if you’re
just starting out. It’s a thing of beauty, though, as it allows
you to track moving objects, setting you up for more freedom
of movement when snapping wildlife, sports and fast cars. It
provides solid support that rotates around a single axis while its
lightweight construction makes it the ideal travel companion.
There are various gimbal head options out there for your
tripod so shop around. This one, from Benro, supports
    telephoto lenses.

  1. A HUGE BAG OF CASH

Researching essential items

for wildlife photographers,

it is amazing how many

of the reviewers forget the

most essential item: a huge

bag of cash. You can picture

yourself on safari or travelling

Europe taking amazing photos

but without a huge bag of

cash, most of the items on a

photographer’s checklist aren’t

going to happen. We at Leisure

Wheels have found that a large

bag of cash is essential for your

photography needs. Why, let’s

face it: you’ve chosen a bloody

expensive hobby; you’re going

to be throwing cash at it until

you die. Enjoy, and good luck.

Price: They say money

doesn’t buy you happiness,

but, hey, we’d give it a try

  1. GORILLAPOD ACTION TRIPOD
Okay, the gimbal head isn’t for you. You’re
more the “do you have anything for under
R100” type of person. How do we say this... no.
But there is some good news, there is
a much cheaper tripod option out there, and
    it’s less than R1 000.
For that money, you get a package that’s not
much more than 30cm tall and which can hold
a camera weighing less than 1kg. So not one
for the heavy duty cameras, then. This is meant
for the mik en druk camera or GoPro. The
Joby GorillaPod action tripod is great if you’re
travelling or out and about. The wrapable legs
can fold around poles or branches or bend to
stand on uneven surfaces such as rocks at a
beach to capture you at your best in virtually
    any situation.
