VOLKSWAGEN
KOMBI

THE KOMBI, a former cargo and
people conveyance, is often more
valuable than some Mercs and
Porsches.Twenty three windows and
barn doors render this one even more
valuable. Built by the vendor as a
reminder of his surfing days it's finished
in white over dark blue and has been
lowered and wears alloy wheels. Inside
is a sea of cream and black vinyl and
non-period air-conditioning integrated
into the dash. Clever. Pushing it along
is a 2-litre engine mated to a manual
gearbox.Discbrakeshavebeenadded.

THERE SEEMS to be no end to what
punters will pay for a Mazda RX-
rotary. This mid 70s model runs a
rare 12A twin distributor engine and
is bolted to an equally rare five-speed
manual gearbox. It is in reasonable
condition for its age, but importantly
it has all the ingredients for a great
starting point to a spectacular project
car. With just 82,565 kms on the clock
this grey with black interior rotary
was last registered in Japan in 1988
and has air-con and leather trim.

PORSCHE 944
In the mid 1970s
Porsche decided it was
time to fling the 911 and
replace it with modern
front-engine/rear-drive
models. Enter the utterly
forgettable 924. Back
to the drawing board
and a more convincing
944 emerged with more
grunt, better handling
and more than an ounce
of entertainment behind
the wheel. Front engine
Porsches didn’t last but
they are cheap and a
944 in good nick won’t
break the bank to buy
or run. Early ones were
powered by a 2.5-litre
four and along the way
an S, S2 and Turbo
versions were added. So
if you want your name
on Porsche ownership
papers entry to the non-
turbo models is as little
as ten grand.
