GS750S IHAVEKNOWN
AND LOVED
6000 revs until theredline.(For an in-depth review,
see page46.)
Like all of these Japanesemotorcycles, you can’t
treat them likemodernbikes andoilneeds changing
every 3000miles, along with the filter.Once set up
corre ctly(rare to find onesosorted) they can be left
alone, exceptfor regular servicing. These machines
were hugely reliable, which is why they became a
despatch rider’sdreaminthe 1980s, which is why
you’llbehard pushedto fin dagood one today. So
many of these beautiful oldJapanese classics were
used by couriers after their valuesdropped, but
before theyhad any chanceof being recognised as a
classic, when theywerejust a nold bike.
So if findingagoodone is atough call, restoring
one will always cost you farmorethan its value once
restored. Parts are hard to come by andwhen they
do turn up they’re notcheap.Valuesareprett ylow
for what this motorcycle isand compared tobuying
anew biketoday.Ihave seenreally nice spoked
wheel, firstyear of productionexamples hit £8000,
with average bikes sitting at around £4-£5000.
From there magwheel/twin-discversions moving
towards thelatter partofthe 1970scan be found
for acouple of grand.
The GS doesn’thave thecultfollowing of the
Z900, soIcan’tsee them everreally making very
big money, which is great for themany people who
want an affordable classic Japanesemotorcycle and
even forthe sideof bikingthatseemstowant to
make bobbersand café racersout of anything.
With the prices ofGS1000Smodels startingto
get more expensive, these 750s couldprove to be a
great andinexpensive alternative. All of these
Japanese four-cylinder classics havebeenoverlooked
as great tourers.I’ll ha ppily rideaGS1000,
XS1100, CB750, GS750, Z900, oranyofthese
type of offeringsfrom Japan, acrossSpain. They
coverlargemileages easily,they’recomfortable,
offe rrespectable performance and are very
comfortable fordistance and, best of all, they’re
agreat deal of fun. Suzuki always offeredagreat
build quality and design.Youcan haveagreat
deal of fun and ride anywhere onaGS750; it is
comfortable, has plenty of torque and handles
very well. You’ll have to rev it harder than a
GS10000, but they’re still surprisinglyquick.
