Why should I be there? Sod’s Law was in full effect
for our annual Cars and Coffee meeting here at the
Complete Kit Car office. For the last couple of years,
we’ve held it on the Easter weekend and been hit
by either cold or wet weather. For 2019, we moved
to July for some sunshine... and we got wall to
wall rain. More galling was the fact that Easter
was sunny and the week leading up to the meeting
witnessed a 36deg heatwave.
The promise of cake was enough to bring out
reasonable numbers of hardy kit car owners despite
the weather, with notable support from both the
East Anglian Tiger Owners’ Club and East Anglian
Kit Car Club. We also saw some familiar cars in the
form of Simon Skelding’s GP Madison (featured
in our July 2015 issue) and Malcolm Horn’s Burton
2CV pick-up (featured in our September 2018 issue),
and Gardner Douglas’s Andy Burrows brought his
427 demonstrator.
While hoods stayed up (for those lucky enough
to have them) and most visitors spent the day
sheltering from the rain in the small corner of our
warehouse that was opened up for the event, there
was enough kit car chat and general laughs to keep
everyone entertained.
Once again, we must thank Sue Howes for her
sterling work in baking cakes for the event... they
were once again the main attraction and a terrific
compensation for venturing out in the worst of the
British summer weather.
We’re likely to move the date of Cars and Coffee
again next year, so place your bets on the weather
now. You’ll probably be on to a winner...
CARS AND COFFEE AT CKC
East Anglian Tiger Owners’ Club and East Anglian Kit Car Club are not put off by a bit of rain.
You might recognise Neil Whitehead’s rare Tiger
Cub from the big Tiger anniversary feature
elsewhere in this issue.
One surefire way to draw people outside into the
rain is to remove a car bonnet... there’s nothing like
it for drawing a crowd at a car meeting.
Andy Burrows from Gardner Douglas made the
trip across Grantham from his factory in the 427
demonstrator to the Cars and Coffee meeting.
Angus Grooby’s Marlin Berlinetta looked pretty
welcoming with its wet weather gear. It’s a
particularly tidy example, too.
A line-up of M-cars... assistant editor Jack’s Midas
sits between a Merlin and Madison. Note the varying
weather gear – soft-top, hardtop and an umbrella!
Malcolm Horn’s Burton Citroën 2CV conversion
always gets admiring glances. It’s powered by a
BMW motorcycle engine.
If there’s any kit car that can cope with the weather,
it’s the Healy Enigma. One of the rare kit cars on
today’s market that’s practical enough for daily use.
Rain may have kept the big numbers away from our Cars and Coffee meeting
this year, but that just meant there was more cake for those who did venture out...
