T

he world has seen several iconic collaborations that have provided
loads of entertainment across a wide spectrum. Instances where you
can’t say the one’s name without instinctively thinking about the
other. I’m talking about combinations like Victor and Bakkies, Lennon
and McCartney, Laurel and Hardy, Jagger and Richards, Petersen and Kramer...
The thing about these combinations is that although each would probably
have reached extraordinary heights on his own, he was just so much better
off with the other one. Victor would still have been unmatched in the line-out,
but how many opportunities would he have had to excel in the loose if Bakkies
hadn’t tossed his opponents aside like empty wrappers?
And if it wasn’t for McCartney’s light and more optimistic approach coupled
with Lennon’s darker and sadder slant, the Beatles probably would have had
significantly fewer hits.
There is, I believe, another iconic pairing on this list: the outdoors
and braais. And now that winter is bidding us goodbye, we’ll all once again
get more opportunities to pack our vehicles, hitch our caravans and head to
our favourite destinations.
In our family, the only thing we carefully plan when we go camping is the
first night’s braai. Because it feels as if that’s the most important one, where
everything must go smoothly from the moment we stop until we finally sit back
in our camping chairs to stare at the fire. Then you’re not in a hurry for coals,
and when you finally dish up the meat, braaibroodjies and salad (and maybe a
potato that had been covered in foil and placed on the coals), the meal tastes
better than anything a Michelin star chef might conjure up.
September is braai month and on p108, Johané serves up some great ideas to
brighten up your braai.
Invite your friends and family, stack the wood (or charcoal if you insist), sit
back, socialise and then eat like kings.

Safe travels!
