Some people say that Land Cruisers are unstoppable in Africa,

and keen angler Freddie Durand from Roodeplaat, Pretoria

couldn’t agree more. He owns two of them.

You’ve got to have serious brand loyalty to
buy two Land Cruisers just a few years apart,
but Freddie had his reasons, and now he
has a choice of what to pull out of his garage
depending on the upcoming trip.

I own a 2016 Land Cruiser 79
double-cab that’s kitted out with a
rooftop tent, which is ideal for my
fishing trips to Henties Bay in Namibia and
Angola. But what really bothers me with
the 79 is that the rear-seat passengers have
awfully limited room to get comfortable
in. Toyota South Africa should consider

adding around 100 mm of legroom and,

while they’re at it, throw in an automatic

transmission option as well. It’s as if nobody

there at Toyota has actually had to sit in the

back of one.

I still own it and have three trips planned

for the upcoming months; one in Namibia

with the family, a boys’ trip to Angola

and then one with the all the families to

Flamingo Lodge in Angola as well – all to do

with fishing of course.

I bought the 200 brand new last year and

though I’ve only been driving it for a few

months, I’ve been dreaming about owning

one all my life. My wife will tell you what

a bargain it was for R700 000. I’m always

towing, so a vehicle powerful enough that

makes towing a pleasure and not a pain is of

the utmost importance. To be honest, I never

considered buying anything other than a

Land Cruiser.

My 200 is kitted out to make long trips

pleasurable for all passengers – especially

those seated in the rear of the cabin, with

Toyota’s built-in refrigerator a particular hit

with the occupants. I also quite like that I

don’t have to stir a manual gearbox when

driving such a big vehicle.

I’ve had the 200 fitted with Rebel

aftermarket wheels wrapped in 285/60

R18 BF Goodrich AT tyres. It also has
