a drift without a problem,
but at the Allemanshoek
Pass the road gets bad and
we can see there’s been
recent flooding. A little bit
farther, the road ascends
steeply up to a plateau. We will later learn
that that we are on the Rammelkop Pass.
Fortunately, there is some concrete or tar
on the steepest bits.
We’re rewarded with the most beautiful
views at the top of the plateau. We don’t
see a single car coming towards us and
we decide right there and then to have
a picnic. That night we camp outside
Sutherland at the Sterland Caravan Park.
Our nylon tent has many mesh windows
and it gets pretty cold that night. Thank
goodness for that extra blanket...
The next morning we pack up, fill up
with diesel in town and drive a short
distance on the R356 tar road past
Sterland. We turn right onto a dirt road
at a sign pointing to to Ouberg and Bo-
Visrivier. This road is also corrugated, but


A WONDERFUL SURPRISE On the road between
Merweville and Sutherlandd, the Laings traversed a pass
unknown to them. They later found out that it’s called
the Rammelkop Pass.
