COMPETITORS
4x4 lifestyle bakkies with attitude.

to perform a few turns while both the
differentials were locked: the axles wound
up and consequently the diffs wouldn’t
unlock after we completed the obstacle. This
is a common phenomenon with diff locks
and can lead to damage if you ignore it. The
best remedy for this is to put the gearbox in
neutral as soon as it is safe to do so, lower
the handbrake and allow the Triton to roll
back freely for a metre or two. This is usually
enough to sufficiently unwind the axles for
you to unlock the diffs with the 4x4 dial.

Conclusion
We think Mitsubishi’s Super Select II system
is the bee’s knees. It’s certainly handy that
you can activate four-wheel drive in the city,
and tackle diesel spills on tar roads during
inclement weather, but it’s not a decisive
factor when off-roading alongside rival
vehicles can also stay in four-wheel drive
mode all day long.
What does impress is how easy it is to drive
a Triton. Most bakkies feel big and clumsy
compared to this agile Mitsubishi.

KNACK FOR BLACK The
interior is bedecked
in classic black and
chrome trim, the
digital displays being
the only providers of
colour. The traditional
4x4 icon between the
clocks (opposite page)
has been modernised.

A fairpricetobesure,butit’snotnearlyasnippy
as the Triton.

Only slightly cheaper and with a smaller engine, but
surprisingly similar performance.

Considerably cheaper than the Triton, but the ride
quality isn’t as good.
