8 | September 2019 go! Drive & Camp
This past June holiday, I was privileged to
travel through Namibia with my wife, Ancen.
How friendly the people are was evident,
and we felt safe. It was only the bad roads
around Sossusvlei that bothered a little.
The first night we camped at the Orange
River Rafting Lodge and shot up to Rehoboth
for the second night which we spent at Lake
Oanob. It was quite an experience camping
next to the dam and we appreciated the
hordes of bird species. You get your own
bathroom facilities, a kitchen, built-in braai
area and a private deck.
Etosha, however, was somewhat
disappointing and we did not see as many
animals as in the Kruger National Park. The
game we did see was healthy. From here we
drove west, past Palmwag to the Khowarib
Lodge south of Sesfontein. The surrounding
mountains are special and the weather...
well, it was so hot we could swim, even
though it was winter. At Palmwag itself they
have a unique campsite where the elephant
walk down the riverbed only about 20 m
from your stand. The rosy-faced lovebirds
that have made their home in the makalani
palm trees were just as extraordinary. The
seeds of these palm trees are so big, we used
them as balls for our own bowls!
The campsite at the recently renovated
Goanikontes Oasis was next. It’s next to the
Swakop River and very popular. If you like
silence, you should preferably not be there
on a weekend.
The roads around Sossusvlei are very
bad and it doesn’t look as if the authorities
are maintaining them. I think it’s the big
buses that speed that destroy them. There
is a sign warning of potholes, and it seems
to be a permanent fixture. Fortunately, the
new Sesriem Oasis campsite at Sossusvlei
compensates. We were the first guests at our
specific stand and the builders were still on
site. You have your own amenities at your
stand.
Many of the campsites we visited – except
for Sossusvlei – weren’t that crowded, and
next time we won’t book ahead.
After 20 days through Namibia, Ancen and
I agreed it was one of the best holidays ever.
Who knows, maybe the cheaper fuel price
contributed to that? It’s almost R2/ℓ cheaper
than at home.
