Gardening Australia – September 2019

(Jacob Rumans) #1

CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT
Shaded in summer, the north-facing
fence is ideal for dendrobium and
cymbidium orchids; Reed (left) and
Justin enjoy their garden with their
whippet, Rosie; a wine barrel is
used as a pond for waterlilies
(Nymphaea spp.) and yellow flag
iris (Iris pseudacorus), while the ivy
sphere is a topiary element that
takes care of itself; the potted
maple is surrounded by pineapple
sage, azalea, geraniums, heuchera
and astilbe, and underplanted with
tulip, crocus and allium bulbs;
Russian sage and Rhododendron
impeditum contrast beautifully
with orange oriental poppy (Papaver
orientale); the lower bed is planted
all the way to the deck, making the
garden feel close and inviting.

Converted into a conservatory, the
garage is the garden’s ‘engine room’.
