SThe A6400 has essentially the same
bodyshell and styling as the previous A6300
model, but with some cosmetic sprucing up
to keep it looking contemporary.

A6400

ON TRIAL

With so much attention focused on Sony’s

full-frame FE mount system, it’s easy to

forget its ‘APS-C’ format E mount cameras,

but theA6400 is a timely reminder of their

compactness and extensive capabilities.

GOING FURTHER

camera – the A6300 – and
becoming acquainted with its
successor has been a welcome
reminder of just how much
is packed into such a small
camera... the mirrorless concept
exemplified. On the outside, the
A6400 isn’t much changed from
the A6300, being very close to the
same size and virtually identical
in both the styling and the control
layout, albeit with some subtle
tidying up of lines, finishes and
textures. On the inside, much is
the same too, but there have been
important upgrades to the AF
system and the video capabilities
(see the Making Movies panel
for the full story here) plus a
later-generation processor –
which delivers quite a number
of enhancements – and a much
bigger buffer memory, doubling
the burst lengths with
continuous shooting.

ou have to take your
hat off to Sony and
acknowledge just
what a huge effort
it’s put into the
development of its FE mount full-
35mm mirrorless camera system
over the last few years. Ten camera
bodies and 34 lenses is no mean
feat, but before the A7 arrived

there was the excellent NEX series
of ‘APS-C’ E mount cameras which
has evolved into the 6000 series,
quietly gaining more and more
capabilities to make their extra
compactness even more attractive.
As it happens, along the way, quite
a bit of the tech from the FE mount
cameras has found its way into the
E mount bodies.

The A6400 represents just
such an update so, if you were
considering the A7 III, but still
really wanted something more
compact and lighter – in terms
of both the camera body and the
lenses – then Sony has read your
mind. It’s been more than two-
and-a-half years since we last
reviewed a Sony E mount
