TONY WHEELER
If we could all turn a misheard lyric into a globally-
renowned travel publication, we would all be Tony
Wheeler. He realised that the words to Joe Cocker’s
Space captain were “lovely planet” and not “lonely
planet” – but decided to go with ‘Lonely Planet’
anyway when he kickstarted a legacy with his first
self-illustrated copy of Across Asia on the Cheap,
which he hand-stapled in a basement apartment
in 1973. He encouraged travelling with an open mind
towardstheculturesoftheworldwithoutstretching

can’t all have our own

record-breaking shows,
travelling like Bourdain
is simple – always be
kind, eat and drink with
locals, and don’t blindly
follow travel guides –
trust your own instincts!
