What aroma best conjures up a day by the beach in Jamaica?
Sticking to legal delights, it must be the smoke drifting from
jerk-seasoned chicken and pork on a nearby grill. Fantastic
examples across the island include Andy ’s in the capital, Kingston,
and the 3 Dives Jerk Centre in Negril. Tradition says the technique
sprang from the Boston Bay area, on the other side of the Blue
Mountains. At the turn-off from the main road to the dinky beach,
half a dozen jerk pits keep the local connection going strong
(www.bostonjerkcenter.com). Accompany your pork (the original
vehicleforjerk)or chickenwithplantain,breadfruit,festival
(frieddumplings)andperhapsa rum-baseddrink.
Boston Bay is around 2¾ hours’ drive from Kingston.

In the rock-speckled seas east of Guernsey,
the gentle green profile of Herm announces
the smallest of the Channel Islands that
is fully open to the public (www.herm.com).
Even bicycles are banned here. A full circuit
of the island on foot is under four miles,
passing some of the finest beaches in the
Channel Islands. Although rock tombs show
that people have lived on Herm for 10,000
years, it’s easy to forget the passage of time
here. Stay at genteel White House Hotel,
which does without clocks,
telephones and TV.
Travel Trident runs ferry services to Herm
from Guernsey’s St Peter Port
(www.traveltrident.com).
