Sunbathe where
the Berlin Wall once ran
In the 1990s, no city had as many
opportunities for reinvention as Germany’s reunited
capital. Areas along the Berlin Wall once out
of bounds opened up to creative new uses.
The Berlin Wall Trail that follows the hated
barrier’s old route reaches lakeside suburbs
that have long drawn sunbathing Berliners,
but also runs near beach bars such as Yaam,
and one by the Badeschiff – a pool moored
in the River Spree (pictured). Another sight
that border guards probably never expected
to see is Mount Mitte, a grown-up-friendly
adventure playground (www.berlin.de/
mauer/en/wall-trail).

ADVENTURES

Explore a real
urban jungle
India’s most populous
city, Mumbai sprawls
as much as its
peninsular site allows.
In its northern reaches
though, the urban
jungle gives way
to actual forest:
the 88sqkm of Sanjay
Gandhi National Park.
Wild leopards live
here (though are rarely
seen), along with
spotted deer, langurs
and numerous bird
and butterfly species.
The Bombay Natural
History Society runs
walks in its core
area, and there’s
also the thousand-
year-old Buddhist
siteof theKanheri
Cavesto explore
(www.bnhs.org;
nature walks
from ` 300).
