The Gardener South Africa – September 2019

‘Salmia Orange’

The tremendous trio

In South Africa there are three varieties
available. Salvia ‘Salmia Pink’ has delicate
blush flowers with fuchsia bases and
stems that make the perfect addition to a
wholesome, pretty-in-pink spring garden.
Its darker, more gothic cousin is Salvia
‘Salmia Dark’ that features splashes of
deep purple and vivid red, and the blazing
Salvia ‘Salmia Orange’ adds joy and
vibrancy to any garden bed. You can’t go
wrong with any of these varieties as they
all provide some much-needed energy and
warmth on chilly spring mornings.

Growing
Salvias can grow in full sun or partial shade.
Even though they are relatively hardy, it is
best to plant later in spring if there is the
chance of frost. Space the plants about
30cm apart and mix in a layer of compost
with the soil before planting. Add a layer
of mulch around the plants and be sure to
keep the soil moist as they grow. To reap the
benefits of the extensive flowering season,
remove any fading flowers as they appear
and remove old stems in early spring. These
plants can be divided every three years in
early spring, before the new growth begins.
