COLT NEW POCKET
OR POCKET POSITIVE?
Q: I recently inherited a
pistol from my father-in-
law who was 94 when he
passed away. The pistol
belonged to his father and
I don’t know much about
it. It is a Colt new Pocket
model revolver in .32
caliber. on the barrel are
the words “Colt D.A. 32.”
It has a 31/2-inch barrel with
serial number 354XX. The
revolver is in very good
condition and everything
works. I don’t know much
more about it. Can you
tell me the history of this
firearm and a value?

A: The Colt New Pocket .32
was manufactured from 1893
to 1905, and as some 30,000

were made. Your serial
number exceeds the known
range. The serial numbers
of the Colt Pocket Positive
(First Issue), which was
offered from 1905 to 1927,
carried on with the New
Pocket’s numbers. A Second
Issue was made from 1927
until 1940. It sounds like you
have a Pocket Positive made
in 1907. The barrel markings
reaffirm my supposition.
Assuming it’s in 70 to 80
percent shape, value is $350
to $500.

PERCUSSION
EGG DUELER
Q: Last time you helped
me out with a Scheintod
Tear Gas revolver. This
time I’m wondering about
a supposed Durs Egg Saw
Handle Percussion pistol
that I’ve acquired. D. Egg

apparently produced his
own guns from 1778 to

  1. I do not have the
    twin, assuming there was
    one. The seller did not
    overcharge me, even if it
    is a fake, although myself
    and a couple of collectors
I respect feel it is proba-
    bly genuine. Photos are
    included. It is about 141/2
    inches long overall, not
    counting the ramrod over-
    hang. The muzzle-to-breech
    plug is 8^3 ⁄ 8 inches. The
    caliber is about .50, and
    the barrel appears unrifled.
    The ramrod is a replace-
ment. It has an oval silver
    plate opposite the lock
    work, and a silver shield
    on the butt, both without
    any inscriptions. The top of
    the barrel has “LonDon”
    with the “L” larger than
    the other letters. The lock

has “D. EGG” under a gold
plug where a vent hole
would be on a flintlock.
It has a set trigger and a
pineapple design in front of
the triggerguard. There are
two gold bands inserted on
the top flat and adjacent
flat on the octagon barrel.
The other top flat is taken
over by the nipple housing,
so there is no gold inlay
there. There are no other
external markings that I
can find. While the barrel
retaining wedge comes
out, the barrel seems stuck
and I’m too chicken to
force it. I have not tried
to remove the lock either.
Everything seems to work
fine. I have several books
on dueling pistols, including
one by Keith r. Dill called,
“London Gunmakers and
the English Dueling Pistol
