Steve Jobs said...
“We at Apple had forgotten who we were. One way to
remember who you are is to remember who your heroes are.”
When Steve Jobs returned to Apple in 1997, one of the
first things he did was rebuild the company’s image.
He felt Apple was still an awesome brand, but had lost
its way. Hiring advertising executive and Apple fan Lee
Clow, he set to work on a new advertising campaign.
The result? Think Different. As Jobs’ biographer Walter
Issacson put it, “It was designed to celebrate not what
the computers could do, but what creative people could
do with the computers.”
A poster series followed featuring someone Jobs
considered a hero, along with text limited to the phrase
‘Think Different’, and lastly a small Apple logo. There
was no mention of the company’s products.
Featured faces included Amelia Earhart,
Joan Baez, Miles Davis, Frank Sinatra
and Orson Welles. The company
was becoming cool again.
