ARCNATIONAL EMERGING BEEF FARMER

OFTHE YEAR AWARD

Thisis another flagship award that acknowledges emerging beef farmers who are members of the

Kaonafatso ya Dikgomo (KyD) Scheme, who have excelled when it comes to how they manage and improve

theirherds and enterprises by making use of tools such as record-keeping, amongst others. Finalists

fromeachof South Africa’s provinces are identified, and ultimately compete for the national title.

TheKyDScheme focuses on assisting emerging cattle farmers to apply beef recording and

improvement technologies to facilitate accurate selection for economically important traits,

aswellasto increase the productivity and profitability of their herds. Emerging farmers

developedthrough the KyD Scheme are registered on the national database, INTERGIS.

Todate,more than 8 000 emerging farmers have become members of the KyD Scheme.

Thepurposeofthisawardis toacknowledgemembersoftheKyDSchemewhoperformwellin

termsoftherecording,managementandperformanceoftheirherds.Theawardalsoaimsto:

1.Encourage emerging cattle farmers to improve their standard of living

throughhigher returns from animal production and job creation;

2. Promote participation in the KyD Scheme;


3. Promote sound breeding and management principles in the beef industry; and


4. Demonstrate the benefit of performance-testing by identifying outstanding herds.
