LIFESTYLE

Parkinson’s disease occurs
when an area of the brain,
the substantia nigra, stops
producing dopamine, an
important neurotransmitter
that is vital for controlling body
movement and emotions.
The main symptoms are
tremors, slurred speech, shaking,
and trouble walking. Sadly, the
main medication available to keep
them at bay, L-dopa, gradually
stops having an effect. There are
also unpleasant side effects.
New research from Thomas
Jefferson University in the
US found that replenishing
the powerful antioxidant
N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC),
led to a significant lessening
of symptoms like tremors, as
well as dementia, depression,
anxiety and hallucinations.
NAC counteracts the effect of
free radicals caused by oxidative
stress while increasing dopamine
in the brain. Available from
compounding pharmacies, it
is safe and affordable, and has
no side effects. It is available
in capsule form (500mg).
In the study, 42 patients with
Parkinson’s were divided into
two groups. The first group
received a combination of
oral and intravenous NAC for
three months along with their
prescribed drugs for Parkinson’s.
The second group only took
their regular prescriptions. Both
groups were given cognitive
and motor function tests. At
the end of three months, they
were tested again. There was no
improvement in the medication-
only group. But in NAC patients,
scores increased nearly 14%.
