Wix allows you to build a basicwebsite simplyby answering afew questions,
and caneven host itfor you for free
Wordpressoffers a coupleof ways of creating a site,
including the optionof hosting ityourself
who triesto view it using a slower
connection.Where possible,you should
resize your photosto the exact height
and widthyou want themto appear. Use
GIF or PNG filesfor diagrams
and logos, and JPEG filesfor
photographs.Reducing the
JPEG qualityto around70 per
cent removes some of the
image data from the photo
but makes the file much
smaller, without significantly
affecting its quality.
Alternative site builders
There are otherwaysto build
your site online.Wix (www.wix
.com) is a simpletool that puts
together a site based onyour
answers to a handful of
questions.You can then customise the
results in anyway you lik e, picking and
choosing from thousands of advanced
design elements.Wix is freeto use,
comes with free hosting and letsyou
crea te as many sites asyou lik e. For more
advancedfeatures, includingconnecting
your own domain,you needto upgrade
to a Premium package from £3 a month.
Another optionwell worth considering
is WordPress (wordpress.com), which
builds a site in front ofyour eyes based
on the answers you giveto questions.
You can buy a domainfor it as part of the
creation process.WordPress is also
available as a self-hosted platform that
givesyou fullcontrol over your site and
lets you add plug-ins and adverts. This is
availableatwordpress.org(note the
slightly different address).
Finally, whenyou buy a domain or
hosting from somewhere like 1&1 IONOS
(www.ionos.co.uk) you can use itsown
builderto put your sitetogether.
