Car Craft – November 2019

(C. Jardin) #1
Left: In the mid ’60s, Sam Auxier Jr.
raced with the Moyer Racing Team,
which owned this 427 High Riser–
equipped ’65 A/FX Comet.

Following the Comet, Sam raced Tasca
Ford’s former A/FX Mustang in Ultra Stock.
Renamed the “Bowani II,” it ran a 427 High
Riser and was sponsored by Bondy Long.
Sam won the 1968 CARS Magazine meet
with this car, beating Grumpy Jenkins in the
final (just as he would in 1969).

Left: This period photo was taken in the
modest Auxier team shop in Silver Spring,
Maryland. The Hemi Dart in the background
was owned by Sam Auxier Sr. and raced by
teammate Chick DeNinno.

Sam^ thinks
this^ is^ a

Clearly,^ his
opponent
is^ Grumpy
Jenkins.

Right: This photo taken at Aquasco
Speedway in Maryland, shows Sam’s
younger brother, Rick, tightening the lug
nuts after an axle change, while Sam (white
T-shirt) and Sam Auxier Sr. (white shoes)
observe. Sam Sr. was a key supporter in
both of his boys’ racing endeavors and was
AHRA’s Ultra Stock division manager.

For 1970, Sam and teammate Chick got matching
Maverick Pro Stockers. A key difference was that
Chick’s Maverick ran a 427 Tunnel Port, while
Sam’s was fitted with a 427 SOHC.

This Pinto was Sam’s last Pro Stock ride,
built by chassis guru Don Hardy. In this
scene, you can see him facing off against
the infamous “Tijuana Taxi” of Gapp &
Roush.

This photo was taken prior to the inaugural
NHRA Pro Stock race at Pomona in 1970.

Notables in this 1969 pit scene are two
Sox & Martin Barracudas and the Platt
& Payne Ford Drag Team Torino.

Sam goes wheels up at York U.S. 30
in his ’69 Mustang Ultra Stocker. By 1971, Sam was running this ’71
Mustang in Pro Stock, powered by a
427 SOHC. It’s one of the coolest “big-
body” Mustangs we’ve ever seen!

The semifinal round of the 1969 CARS
Magazine meet: Sam versus Sox & Martin.
Sam prevailed.

This scene of Sam versus fellow Ford racer
Dave Lyall was at York U.S. 30 in 1969.
