KNOW THE RISKS
Rising blood pressure (BP) puts extra
strain on the heart and blood vessels.
If undiagnosed, or left untreated, this
can damage the organs, causing
health problems. ‘It’s the main risk
factor for stroke and a major one for
heart attack, heart failure and kidney
disease. There’s also increasing
evidence that it’s a risk factor for
vascular dementia,’ says Katharine
Jenner, CEO at Blood Pressure UK.
KNOW YOUR NUMBERS
A blood pressure level that’s 140
over 90 (140/90 mmHg), or above,
indicates high blood pressure and will

need to be monitored over several
weeks. ‘A single high reading
doesn’t necessarily mean you have
high blood pressure. Many things
can affect it throughout the day,
so you’ll need to see that it stays
high over time,’ says Katharine.
KEEP IT IN CHECK
There’s often no signs or symptoms,
so getting your BP measured is the
only way to know if it’s high. See your
GP or buy a machine to monitor it.
Know your Numbers! week
(9-15 September) will have pressure
stations across the UK offering free
checks. Visit bloodpressureuk.org.

High blood pressure is the biggest cause of premature death and disability
in this country, yet more than five million people aren’t aware they have it.
