ONE THING BEAUTY

If you only do one thing

GO GREEN!

Y

our daily routine can help make
the planet more beautiful too,
as Brianne West, founder of
Ethique* by Brianne West, explains...

1

USE SOLID FORMULAS IN PLACE
OF LIQUID FORMULAS
A liquid shampoo or body wash can be
made up of up to 8 0 % water. Conditioner
is even higher, at up to 9 5%. Using one
conditioner bar, instead of the equivalent
five bottles, saves up to 1 4ltr of water.
Using less water reduces the amount of
energy used in the pumping of water,
which in turn reduces our
carbon emissions.
TRY Ethique
Pinkalicious
Shampoo Bar,
£12.99, Holland
& Barrett –
equivalent to
three bottles of
normal shampoo!

2

BUY PRODUCTS WITH
COMPOSTABLE/ZERO-WASTE
PACKAGING
A lot of beauty products on the market
will be packaged primarily in plastic –
and only 9 % is actually recycled. This
means that 8 0 million shampoo and
conditioner bottles go to landfill every
year, where they remain for hundreds if
not thousands of years.
TRY Hotel Chocolat Rabot
1745 Coffee Body Scrub,
£16, 280ml, rabot1745
beauty.com. Comes
in a reusable
coffee cup!

3

CHOOSE
MULTI-USE
PRODUCTS WITH
LONG-LASTING
FORMULAS
A product that does
more than one thing is

a great thing! For example, body oils
can double up as hair oils or cuticle
saviours, and clear lip balms can be
used as a highlighter or brow fixer.
This is a great way to reduce the amount
of packaging you’re throwing away.
TRY Balmonds Skin Salvation, £7.99,
30ml, Ocado

4

SAY NO TO WIPES!
Instead, use face cleansers with
face cloths or flannels. After a single use,
wipes end up in landfill or, worse still,
are flushed into sewage systems, ending
up in our waterways. Wet wipes are often
partly made with polyester, and as they
slowly break into little tiny pieces, they
release microplastics – marine life
consume them, and via the food chain,
eventually so do humans.
TRY The Ramer
Cleansing Shammy,
£4.99, ramer
sponges.com

That's how many units
of packaging are
produced every year by the
global cosmetics industry,
most of which are not
recyclable, according
to campaign Zero
Waste Week.
